Hi everyone,
Our list of distribution codes is becoming rather unmanageable! Since we need a new distribtution code for every APPEAL, CAMPAIGN, FUND, GL Account Permutation.
How do you get rid of old distributions codes? For example I have distribution codes for appeals that ended several months ago - do you just delete them - as a database person this makes me nervous :-) How can I archive them?

Start with the basics... do you really need all those codes?
It seems rather redundant to be creating a new distribution code for every appeal and campaign permutation.
FR is basically composed of two things: Marketing and Accounting. Distributions are considered the "Product Codes" for the Accounting side of FR. If your accounting for FR is standard to most FR organizations, you should only need new Distribution codes when you have new designated accounts, which means perhaps one or two new ones per year.
Many organizations don't change distribution codes for multiple years.
Separate your setup between Accounting (Funds and Distributions) and Marketing (Campaigns and Appeals) and you can mix and match these however you want, eliminating hundreds of permutations that you currently have hard-coded.
You will still need new distributions for each distinct GL Income Account you're dealing with. Also, most organizations do not mix their GL accounts across Funds, so you would need a new code for each Fund / Income Account combination, but that's it.
As for getting rid of codes, you can do it, but that deletion can have some seriously disruptive consequences: Namely, FR views can have problems displaying all the FR data if any of them touches the Products table and you have missing Distribution codes.
This means various FR reports could show incomplete or erroneous info. Also, the FR tab under Manage Customers and IQA queries based on the FR objects can throw errors or incorrect data since these all rely on views that touch the Products table.
