A staff member receives an error and I was curious if anyone else has encountered this issue and what the resolution was.

Error: The customer portfolio is shutting down due to an internal error. Contact System Administrator.

The information in the log file should help diagnose the problem.

The LogView utility does just that - display the log. What you see in the log may or may not (usually 'not') actually help you to diagnose the problem. An 'invalid use of null' error, for example, could have many causes.

When we encounter these errors, the problem is caused by something in a particular record. One of the first things I'd suggest is rebuilding the name_address pointers (in 10.x, it's under Utilities > Reports and Queries > System Setup).

I wish there was a definitive troubleshooting guide for these error messages - what I know of the log errors is just what I've accumulated over time. I will say that ASI Tech Support has been very good at troubleshooting these errors when I've reported them. The NiUG mailing list is another good place for answers.
